Reproductive effort and growth in Crassostrea gigas: comparison of young diploid and triploid oysters issued from natural crosses or chemical induction ArchiMer
Normand, Julien; Ernande, Bruno; Haure, Joel; Mccombie, Helen; Boudry, Pierre.
Early reproductive effort and growth were measured in 3 groups of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas: 1 diploid group and 2 triploid groups resulting from either chemical induction (3nCB) or crosses between tetraploid and diploid parents (3nDT). Oysters were reared under intensive nursery conditions and sampled when 5 mo old. Reproductive effort was estimated by cross-sectional area measurements of the visceral mass (i.e. gonadic occupation) and maturation stage was assessed by qualitative histology. As expected, comparison of the reproductive patterns of these 3 groups revealed a lower reproductive effort in triploid individuals relative to diploid. However, gonadic occupation in triploid oysters was higher than expected in both 3nCB and 3nDT groups, as...

Rising water temperatures, reproduction and recruitment of an invasive oyster, Crassostrea gigas, on the French Atlantic coast ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Beninger, Peter G.; Barille, Laurent; Papin, Mathias; Haure, Joel.
The recent appearance and invasion of feral oysters (Crassostrea gigas) along the northern European Atlantic coast, underscores the necessity to investigate the relationship between environmental variables, reproductive physiology, larval development and recruitment. We studied these relationships at both high (HT) and intermediate (IT) - turbidity sites, through historical data on water temperatures, multi-parameter environmental probes, histological analyses, and field collections of planktonic larvae and settled post-larvae in 2005 and 2006. A progressive warming trend was observed, especially since 1995, when oyster proliferation first became severe. Threshold temperatures for oocyte growth, larval development and settlement were achieved in both 2005...

Sélection de paramètres physiques pour la régulation et la maîtrise de la distribution de nourriture (Skeletonema costatum) aux coquillages d'intérêt commercial ArchiMer
Haure, Joel; Palvadeau, Hubert; Nourry, Max; Penisson, Christian; Martin, Jean-louis.
A study was realized to automate the distribution of phytoplankton (Skeletonema costatum) in the extensive breedings of shells of commercial interest. Physical parameters were selected to define their domain of application for the realization of such a project The work was realized in spring (in June, 1999) and in autumn (in November, 1999) in different dilution of phytoplankton in a treated subterranean salt water. The results showed that the fluorescence gave a better sensibility to inter seasonal in the explanation of the distributed food, but lost as representation during the night-phases, On the other hand, the absorption ( optical density) presented less daily variability and with good correlations with the nourishing concentration of the environment...

Spatial and temporal adjustments in gill and palp size in the oyster Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Ernande, Bruno; Haure, Joel; Barille, Laurent.
Spatial and temporal variations in gill and palp size were studied during 1 year in naturally-settled populations of the Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas, reciprocally transplanted between two contrasting sites located along a marked gradient of turbidity conditions. The variability of suspended particulate matter (SPM) and food particles, estimated by the concentration of chlorophyll-a, was measured with in situ water-quality probes. Over a full seasonal cycle, oysters exposed to high-turbidity (HT) conditions exhibited a lower gill-to-palp (G:P) ratio, compared with those exposed to low-turbidity (LT) conditions. Seasonal variations in the G:P ratio were observed at the LT site in relation to the spring phytoplanktonic bloom, but differed from those that...

Spatial distribution in a temperate coastal ecosystem of the wild stock of the farmed oyster Crassostrea gigas (Thunberg) ArchiMer
Cognie, B; Haure, Joel; Barille, L.
The Pacific oyster, Crassostrea gigas, well known throughout the world because of its ability to adapt to a wide range of environmental conditions, was introduced for cultivation into France on a massive scale in the 1970s. With global warming, the reproductive population, confined at the beginning to the south of the French Atlantic coast, became established at more northern latitudes (above 45 degrees 58'N), and wild C gigas began to colonize coastal areas such as our study site, Bourgneuf Bay (1 degrees-2 degrees W, 46 degrees-47 degrees N), an oyster-farming site. An original approach, based on orthophotograph analysis and in situ biomass sampling, revealed that, in the northern part of this bay, more than 70% of the total C gigas biomass was composed...

Storage of Pacific oysters Crassostrea gigas in recirculating tank: ammonia excretion and potential nitrification rates ArchiMer
Buzin, Florence; Dupuy, Beatrice; Lefebvre, Sebastien; Barille, Laurent; Haure, Joel.
In response to the closure of shellfish production sites due to increasing occurrence of toxic algal blooms, land-based recirculating aquaculture systems (RAS) could be used by producers to store a proportion of their stock temporarily. An RAS prototype was tested in this study to store Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas over a range of temperatures. In such systems, the water temperature is a variable that could influence the bivalve excretion rate of ammonia, the concentration of which may become critical for the water quality. In this study, we first estimated the total ammonia nitrogen (TAN, N-NH4+ + N-NH3) excretion of the Pacific oyster and then investigated whether the bacterial population associated with the oysters could act as a natural biofilter...

Suivi de l'émission de larves et de la fixation du naissain des huîtres creuses Crassostrea gigas en baie de Bourgneuf durant l'été 2004 ArchiMer
Martin, Jean-louis; Haure, Joel; Dupuy, Beatrice; Nourry, Max; Palvadeau, Hubert; Papin, Mathias; Penisson, Christian; Thouard, Emmanuel.

Temperature and seston quantity and quality effects on field reproduction of farmed oysters, Crassostrea gigas, in Bourgneuf Bay, France ArchiMer
Dutertre, Mickael; Beninger, Peter G.; Barille, Laurent; Papin, Mathias; Rosa, Philippe; Barille, Anne-laure; Haure, Joel.
The proliferation of the voluntarily-introduced cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas, has attained the proportions of species invasion in many intertidal habitats in Europe, presumably resulting from successful reproduction of farmed individuals. It is thus imperative to better understand the reproductive characteristics of farmed oysters, since they are directly under human control. We quantified the dry tissue mass (DTM), gametosomatic index (GSI), and reproductive cycle of farmed oysters at two sites in Bourgneuf Bay, France, in relation to environmental parameters using continuously-recording probes in 2005 and 2006. The GSI was developed for this study, based on the actual area occupied by gametes, rather than the area of the gonad previously used for...

Testage de souches d'huîtres plates Ostrea edulis tolérantes à Bonamia ostreae: élevage contrôlé, écophysiologie et modélisation de la croissance ArchiMer
Haure, Joel.
Since the 1960's, breeding of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis has been under threat from two protozoan parasites, one of which is Bonamia ostrea. Several attempts have been made to introduce flat oysters of the Ostrea genus on the French coast, without much success. The IFREMER genetics laboratory. at Ronce les Bains has used selective pressure with Bonamia ostrea to obtain bonamiosis-resistant strains of the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis. The growth and physiology of these animaIs was studied in an intensive breeding system in which the algae Skeletonema costatum was used as fodder. The growth performance of the tolerant animals was compared with that of non-selected controls over a period of three years (1994,1995,1996). An analysis of the results showed the...

Summer mortality associated with juveniles of the oyster Crassostrea gigas is the result of a complex interaction between the host, pathogens and environment. Divergent selection based on summer survival have been applied to produce families with resistant and susceptible progeny. Here, we describe the use of suppression subtractive hybridization to generate 150 clones that were differentially regulated between resistant and susceptible F2 progeny. The nucleotide sequence of these 150 clones was determined. Among the 25 unique sequences that matched with the products of known genes, those putatively implicated in energy generation (12%) and immune function (16%), systems suspected to be implicated in summer mortality, were extended and analyzed by real...

Toward reference intervals for shellfish: An illustrative case of feeding and respiratory activities in the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas ArchiMer
François, Cyrille; Haure, Joel; Billy, Jean-christophe; Renault, Tristan.
Background The Quality Assurance and Laboratory Standards Committee of the American Society for Veterinary Clinical Pathology and the guidelines of the Clinical and Laboratory Standards Institute provide a framework for establishing reference intervals of physiological parameters in reputedly healthy individuals, humans, and terrestrial animals, respectively. This framework was applied for the first time to the Pacific cupped oyster, Crassostrea gigas. Reference intervals (RIs) would, first, be of interest for research purposes, including pathophysiology studies. RI determination is the first step before considering the use of RIs for field applications by farmers and marine shellfish health services. Objectives The purpose of this study was to propose...
